Dear Sir,
I am writing to express my sincere and deep disappointment in the decision not to light the Empire State Building in the commemorative colors of red and white in honor of American Revolutionary War Hero Brigadier General Casimir Pulaski.
As you may be aware, the Polish American community will be celebrating their culture and heritage this Sunday with the 74th annual Pulaski Day Parade. Even though the parade route includes Fifth Avenue, the organizer's application for the special lighting of the Empire State Building to mark the occasion was rejected.
To dismiss General Pulaski's importance to the founding of our nation, and the Polish-American community's contributions to our nation, is disappointing. The decision is even more questionable when I consider some of the private interests whose applications were accepted.
In the past year, the Empire State Building has been lit in colors to recognize the Green Bay Packers' Super Bowl victory and the 20th anniversary of the Blue Man Group. It has also bee illuminated on behalf of many laudable philanthropic organizations.
Yet, for General Pulaski, a brave warrior who saved the life of George Washington in the Battle of Brandywine and ultimately gave his own life during the Revolutionary War, the Empire State Building will grant no honor. For all that General Pulaski gave his country and for the pride of all Polish-Americans, I urge you to reconsider this decision.
I am one of many proud Italian-Americans who loves seeing the Empire State Building on Columbus Day bathed in the colors of the Italian flag. I sincerely hope that you will grant my Polish-American friends the same sense of honor and appreciation.
Sincerely,
Bill Pascrell, Jr.
Member of Congress
