Polonez was founded in 1966 as the Polish community in Hamilton was preparing to celebrate the Centennial of Canada. The goal of the original founders was to promote and preserve the rich Polish folk culture and heritage among the Polish immigrants in Hamilton and to present it to Canadian society.
Polonez has become a vital element of Polonia in Hamilton as well as the multicultural community of Canada, taking part in many celebrations such as Dożynki, Uroczystosci Konstitucji 3ego maja and Dzień Niepodległosci. Polonez takes part in many folklore festivals in Ontario, Quebec, The United States of America and Poland.
Today Polonez has a membership of 100 children and young people in four age groups and is a guest of the Polish Alliance of Canada, Grupa II. Most of the members of Polonez were born in Canada and many are second and third generation Canadians, as is their artistic director. The group boasts a rich repertoire of over 20 national and regional dances and an even richer wardrobe of authentic costumes, most imported directly from Poland.
